First Steps

The first step I always take is to make the bodice pattern. I do this to make sure I have the exact neckline measurements that I need for the body linen to fit as needed. I used a duct tape pattern ( made with Zanetta’s help) and came up with a three part bodice pattern. Most bodices can be made in two, and sometimes even one piece, but I went with three in this case to allow for fitting changes, and to keep the grain of my fabric as straight as possible. The 1530s has a pronounced “cone” shape to the torso, with a wide shoulder and small waist, and using three pieces lets me spread the drastic difference in measurement out.

Once the bodice pattern is set, then I measure the neckline, grab a pen , and sketch out the plan. This one will use a neckline “yoke” to keep the perfect square shape the portrait has.

I spent an entire day pulling threads to get all of my pattern pieces cut out. When making body linen, especially when using very small seams like I am planning on, being on the straight of the grain is very important. I need to use the machine for part of the construction, and even a small variation in the edge can mean you miss part of the edge and end up with a hole in your seam.
